The Charioteer

"The charioteer of the human soul drives a pair of steeds, and one of the horses is beautiful, good, and formed of such elements, whereas the makeup of the other one is quite the opposite." -Phaedrus

No Cussing Goes to the City Council

Despite the air of pleasantry, there is something grotesque about the whole thing; something that hearkens back to the a Geneva-esque legislative moralism. Ironically, precisely at a time when psychoanalysis takes off in the contemporary world, legistlative "proclamations" of prohibition such as these perpetuate repressive behavior, which is far worse than the letting loose of a four-letter word. Indeed, is makes for good business! Here is part of the msnbc article

"California community declares itself a cuss-free zone

SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. - This tranquil community on the edge of Los Angeles has become a cursing-free zone.

Under a City Council proclamation approved Wednesday, those who use profanity or make rude gestures could find themselves shamed into better behavior by the unsettling glances of South Pasedena residents who take their reputation for civility seriously.

"That's one of the purposes of this," Mayor Michael Cacciotti said of his city's proclamation designating the first week of March as No Cussing Week. "It provides us a reminder to be more civil, to elevate the level of discourse."

In other news, is psychoanalysis really taking off in the contemporary world? I thought it reached a peak in the 60s & 70s and then as neuroscience started to grow and the one-sidedness of Freud's approach (sex, sex, sex!) become more apparent, it started declining in popularity. And while the decline may be over (I think), I wasn't aware of any return of growing enthusiasm either.

Am I missing something though? Is psychoanalysis on the rise again?

*Gasp* I should tattle on you!

You may be right on the actual decline of psychoanalysis. Perhaps I'm just living in the past, or optimistic, or just more influenced by people around me than what is actually going on! I do not think, however, that Freud has lost momentum since his theory is presupposed in probably the majority of counseling program. I know it is even at Franciscan!
